UVQG 2018 Quilt Show Classes – Information

  • Pre-registration is required for classes.
  • Register early to secure your place.
  • Seating is limited to12 students per class.
  • All Classes will be held in Douglas Hall.
  • Registration for any class vacancies will be filled at the Quilt Show.
  • Fill out the attached registration form. Email our Class Coordinator atuvqgshowclasses@gmail.com with any questions.
  • Pre-registration forms and payment must be received at the guild address listed on the registration form no later than April 14, 2018.
  • Registrations will be processed in the order that they are received.
  • Email confirmations will be sent and will include information on any items (scissors, rotary cutter, etc) that you will need to bring for your class.
  • Please arrive at your class five minutes before starting time.

    “Taking the Fear out of “Y” Seams”

    Friday, April 20 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Instructor: Linda Garmon

    “Y” seams are not all that scary!!! In fact, they are relatively simple if you know the concept. This class will be strictly a “technique” class. Your project will be sewing hexagons into a “flower”. You will have (7) 5 inch hexagons to work with. All junctions will be clearly marked by you so you can see where to start and stop your seam.

    Bring a small ruler (6”x6”; 2 1/2”x10”)

    Kit fabrics will vary. Confident beginner skill level or above.

    Shoulder Messenger Bag

    Friday April 20 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Instructor: Helen Belk

    This Messenger Bag is the perfect small carryall and everyday bag. Measuring 11“x10”, it features two zipper pouches and a pocket to carry your essentials. Coordinating fabrics in each kit allows you to choose which fabric you wish for the outside or the lining.

    The kit includes the coordinating fabrics, nylon strapping, zippers and charm pulls, interfacing and written instructions.

    Confident beginner skill level or above.

    Sew In Style Thread Catcher with Detachable Pincushion

    Friday April 20 from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Instructor: Teri Gregg

    The Sew In Style Thread Catcher is a combination pincushion/scrap bag designed to keep your work area neat and orderly. It sits perfectly poised on the work surface or on the arm of your favorite chair, ready to receive threads, clippings and cuttings. Perfect for sewers, quilters and anyone who does any sort of needlework. It’s not only a pretty addition to your work space, but oh-so-practical, too! This class will be taught by the pattern designer who will provide some of her own tips and tricks for a quicker and neater finish. Confident beginner skill level or above.

    Fabrics in kits will vary. Bring scissors, a small acrylic ruler, a fabric marking pen and 10 – 12 pins.

    Supply kit will includes the printed pattern, pre-cut fabrics and all additional supplies to complete your thread catcher.

    Free Motion Quilting Sampler

    Saturday, April 21 from 9:00 a.m. to Noon. Instructor: Patty Dawley

    Join Patty in this hands-on instructional class to learn how to do free-motion quilting for smaller projects on your domestic sewing machine. In this class you will learn fun and easy quilting designs that will allow you to do your own free motion machine quilting on table runners, wall hangings and even on larger projects such as twin to full size quilts. Your Supply Kit includes a large 42” x 34” quilt “sandwich”, (backing, batting and top fabric) as well as a marking pen.

    Bring along quilting gloves if you have them

    Skill level – Beginning to Intermediate and basic knowledge of a sewing machine.

    Dresden Flower – Wall Hanging

    Saturday, April 21 from 1:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. Instructor: Barb from Bolts to Blocks

    Barb, from Bolts to Blocks, will lead us is in creating her Dresden Flower Wall Hanging or Table Topper. The three Dresden “flowers” are all in bright colors and are growing on rick rack stems with leaves. Free motion grass is growing at the bottom. It finishes at approx. 42” x 42”. This bright and cheery design includes the fabrics for the top, the Dresden flowers, the leaves, rick rack and binding. A plastic Dresden template is provided. Blades for two of the Dresden flowers will be pre-cut for you and you learn how to cut the third Dresden flower.

    Bring basic sewing kit, small scissors, a rotary cutter, and assorted threads in bright colors.

    Skill Level – Confident Beginner and above.

    Fabric Box with Buttoned Flaps

    Sunday, April 22 from 10:00 a.m. – Noon. Instructor: Teri Wells

    This cute fabric box is the perfect thing for holding your sewing essentials. But it’s many uses do not stop there. Great for the bathroom, kids room, or any room in the house. The bag is structured with foam stabilizer sandwiched between the outer fabric and the lining. Some light machine quilting holds the layers together. The pretty curved flaps add another design element along with the finishing buttons. Measures 12” x 12” x 3”. (Props in photo not included.)

    Wonky Squares Quilt Blocks

    Sunday, April 22 from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Instructor – Linda Garmon

    Using a 5” square, we will be cutting the center open randomly, folding back the cut flaps and laying another fabric behind it. Then we sew around the “hole” we made attaching the two pieces of fabric together. The purpose is to use any and all scraps, creating a fun scrappy quilt square. These squares can be used in various quilt blocks. You will be making two 9 patch blocks in class.

    The kit will include fabrics to make 10 Wonky Squares including (20) 5” squares,

    For all skill levels. Choose from our selection of charm packs for your patterned fabrics. Your Supply Kit will include (8) 5” background squares, (1) 3 1⁄2” cardboard template and pattern instructions.

    Button Bunny

    Instructor – Kennette from “Something to Crow About”

    How cute is this?!? Kenette will lead us in making this sweet little wool appliqué project. The finished size is 6-1/2 ” x 6 1/2″.

    Kit Includes hand dyed wool, butterfly button, button ribbon, backing and pattern. For all skill leels.

    Crayon Enhanced Embroidery

    Friday, April 20 from 1:30pm to 3:30 pm. Instructor: Helen Belk

    This class is all about using crayons to enhance your embroidery. The method involves using crayons to “tint” elements of your embroidery design with an easy process that Helen will teach you. The process allows for subtle tinted shading or bolder colors. You will then be adding decorative embroidery stitches and some small beads to complete your 6” x 8 1⁄2” design. This technique can be used for quilt blocks, pillows, table runners, pillowcases, etc. The supply kit includes the printed pattern and directions from Crab-Apple Hill Designs, white fabric, crayons for tinting, embroidery floss and needles, small beads and a small embroidery hoop.

    Folded Fabric Flowers

    Saturday, April 21 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Instructor – Shirley Pyle

    Imagine the many uses for these dimensional fabric flowers made from fabric strips. Simple hand sewing along with Shirley’s easy techniques will give you all that you need to know to make a variety of designs. These can be used as embellishment for such things as hair clips and headbands, clothing, purses, aprons, pillows or whatever your imagination can come up with.

    The supply kit includes pre-cut fabric, thread, needles and miscellaneous buttons.

    Penny’s Primitive Wool Pillow

    Saturday, April 21 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Instructor: Kennette from Something to Crow About

    Wool pennies are all the rage and this pillow promises to be a favorite of yours! The largest penny is 3″ and the smallest is 1″ using a wide assortment of wool colors in muted solids, textures and plaids to create a primitive look. The gorgeous pennies will be hand stitched on a solid black wool background. Finished size is 18” x 18”.

    Kit includes wools to finish the pillow top. For all skill levels.

    Crazy Quilt Stichery

    Saturday, April 21 from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Instructor – Donna Scully

    Have you ever dreamed of learning how to do those fabulous stitches used in crazy quilt blocks? Well, here is your chance! Donna will be providing you with a fully assembled quilt block using beautiful Tula Pink fabrics. She will instruct you in embellishing with various beginning to intermediate crazy quilt stitches including the fly stitch, feather stitch, hex stitch, sheaf stitch and chevron stitch.

    Quick and Easy English Paper Piecing

    Sunday, April 22 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Instructor – Teri Gregg

    This class is an introduction to English Paper Piecing. We will briefly discuss the history of the English paper piecing then move on to how to use paper templates, methods for attaching the fabric to the templates and how to sew the pieces together. We discuss how to use various paper shapes such as diamonds, hexagons, pentagons, clams and apple cores. There will be various visual aids showing the amazing flexibility of this piecing method as well as a small hands- on lesson in using the templates with fabrics.

    The supply kit will include paper hexagon shapes, a needle, thread and a resource sheet with information about free shape downloads, places to purchase laser cut paper shapes and links to various instructional videos.

    Bring a pair of scissors to class. For all skill levels.
